R.I.P. P.A.H.

Dear Pixels Art House blog,

I’m sure you are happily floating around in bloggy heaven right now. I just wanted to say I’m sorry I let you die.

I didn’t mean to. I was doing SO good. We almost reached 4 months together. But that stupid allergy bomshell really threw me for a loop. The lifestyle change was not as easy as I thought it would be.  I eventually realized that in order to take better care of my health something had to give. Unfortunately it had to be you.

When I started feeling better I could not bring myself to return to a dead blog. Too much time had passed and you no longer inspired me.

I had to make a new start. I know you will understand.

Rest in peace, dearest blog. You served me well!

xo

(paint, copics, Kate Hadfield’s movie board doodle, photos from magazine/internet)

Learned a valuable lesson today. Do not use Copics on your movie tickets! lol Did not react very well at all, as you can see. that giant border was initially very very thin but it spread like crazy. Oops.

DAY 50!!!!!

WOW! I am so impressed with myself today. I have attempted 365 photography projects twice in the past and the longest I ever lasted was 34 days. I cannot believe I’m at 50 and still going strong!

Thought I would do a little project update today to see where I’m at . . .

1) Finishing a page each day is usually possible but not always. I haven’t been pressuring myself to finish a page each day, as long as I start one.

2) At first I was stressing to post online every day but I’ve let go of that. I usually finish a page before bed and the last thing I feel like at that time is getting on the computer. Saturdays have become my mornings to catch up with posting (and finishing pages too)

3) I thought I’d be trying out all different sizes and having pockets and envelopes everywhere and getting all funky like that but I’ve mostly kept to the standard 8.5×11 format. It wasn’t a conscious decision, it just seems to be where my creativity leads me all the time.

4) I didn’t think I’d be doing so much digital for this project. The goal was to unplug. But sometimes I just NEED to play in Photoshop. And sometimes I need to get my page done quickly. So I just go with the flow. I print my digi pages and add them in alongside the painted ones and I love how they look together.

6) As you can see I have yet to decorate the binder. It’s all made of plain cardboard and it is begging to be painted. Now that I’m settled into the project ideas are coming to me about what to do on the cover and what I want to call the project. I’m excited to start on this, but nervous too. So much pressure! lol

I wasn’t sure at the beginning how this whole thing would go but I’m really happy with how the project is evolving for me. I started off with an idea from someone else and am slowly carving out my own version of it.

Now all I have to do is actually MAKE my 50th page! ha!

Spread Your Wings and Fly

(tissue paper, Golden acrylics, Copics, stencils, Sharpie paint pen)

I am on a roll today! Having so much fun at my craft table.

This is a canvas I painted for my mom – I’m going to give it to her for her birthday in a few weeks. That’s her sometime in the 1950′s when she was just a little thing.

Christine Honsinger and Erica Killen’s articles in the new Spring Somerset Digital Studio inspired me to incorporate my heritage photos into whimsical works of art.  Thought it would be fun to try this on canvas, not just digitally. I am so in love with the result!

Also today I noticed I am becoming increasingly comfortable with a brush or pen in my hand – so exciting!! :)

49/365: To Love Oneself

(watercolours, Neocolor II crayons, Copics, stencils, book paper, rub-on, shelf liner and punchinella for texture)

I got up early this morning and worked on my first page inspired by the Art Journal 52 class.

It almost turned into a huge disaster a few times. The swirly thing coming out of the heart is a rub-on. Well the red part is the rub on. The blue parts you see is where I tried to trace/add swirls with black pen ink. It looked terrible! So I had to paint over it all. Then I almost ruined the background when I had the idea to write all over it. So glad that Copics can be reactivated! I used the colourless blending tool to make the words fade into the background and then I added more painted texture on top so it wasn’t so prominent.

I’m happy with how this turned out in the end but it was a huge headache! Hence the reason I use patterned papers and scrapbooking embellishments so often lol! It’s so much easier and risk-free. But I’m happy I’m challenging myself because when I do the page feels a lot more “me” and that makes it worth the effort.

Art Journal 52 – New Workshop!

In my never-ending obsession with online workshops I’ve just joined another!

I met sherrieJD when we sold our digital designs together at ScrapArtist and fell in love with her amazing background-making abilities. I use them in my digital layouts all the time. (See here and here for example)

She is selling at DeviantScrap now and I noticed she had a workshop going so how could I resist? It’s called Art Journal 52.

Don’t let the fact that it’s hosted on a digital site fool you! She is teaching hands-on techniques for non-digital art journaling.

I’ve noticed lately that all my art journal attempts rely heavily on patterned papers and scrapbooking supplies. What I’m hoping to get out of this class is the courage to paint/stencil/draw my own backgrounds and visual elements more often.
